School holidays and weekends can be a challenging time for parents/ carers of children with special educational needs (SEN), especially when it comes to keeping them engaged, active, and happy outside the structure of school.   

To help you plan meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable activities tailored to your child’s unique needs, we have included information, ideas and links that can help you make free time a fun and fulfilling experience for the whole family.

Our listings include general events for children, young people and families as well as those specifically tailored for children with SEND. Please contact the provider to check suitability.

 

Activities for children, young people & families:

 

The Sycamore Trust : Social & Communication Toddler Group 'Uniquely Me'

Date & Time: Every Wednesday 11:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: St Alban's Church Hall, Langdale Gardens, Hornchurch RM12 5LA

 

  • Calm Playgroup Session for children 0-5 years
  • Lower numbers
  • Sensory Experiences
  • Support & advice provided by Sycamore Trust UK
  • This group is suitable for those children who would thrive in a calmer environment to support their social interaction and communication skills

 

Cost: £3 per session  &  £1.50 for additional children

Booking:  Booking opens on Saturday for the following week.

Havering Active & Para Sports : 5-25 years

Indoor Para Athletics sessions for children and young people aged 5 to 25 with SEND:

Venue: The Studio at Romford YMCA, Rush Green Road, RM7 0PH.

Day & Times: Wednesdays 4:30pm to 5:30pm: Term time only. Parents/carers must attend.

Cost: Free

Havering Youth Service : 10-19 years (up to 25 for young people with additional needs)

Havering Youth Service offer a range of activities for children and young people.

They offer informal education, fun activities and additional support for those who would benefit from this.

Pre-Teens Youth Club (Year 6 & 7 )

Havering Youth Services brand new Pre-Teens Youth Club has officially re-launched! 

This club is for school aged young people in Years 6 & 7 to support them with the transition from Primary to Secondary school. 

Each week there are fun activities and ongoing wellbeing support for young people to be their best selves, as well as the opportunity to make new friends. 

Friendly youth workers will be available for chats and to provide support for the young people.

Venue: MyPlace Youth Centre,  Harold Hill 

Day & Time: Every Friday from 5-7pm

Revellers SEND Youth Club:  11-17 years

As part of the Youth Services Programme Havering run a youth club for children and young people aged 11-17 years with special educational needs and disabilities who are living in Havering. 

Venue:  MyPlace Youth & Community Centre in Harold Hill

Day & Time: Every Tuesday evening from 7-9pm

Senior Revellers SEND Youth Club: 18-25 years

As part of the youth Services Programme Havring run a youth club for young people aged 18 to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities. The youth club focuses on making new friends and taking part in fun activities.  

Day & Time:  Every Thursday from 7-9pm

Venue: Rainham Royals Youth Club.

Cost: £3 fee per session

Launchpad SEND Youth Club: 12-18 years

Launchpad is a free, weekly SEND youth club for young people aged 12-18 needing 1:1 support.  Hosted by DABD, it focuses on independence, socialising, and activities like crafts and trips.

You must contact DABD to register interest and have received an offer of a place before attending.

Blind in Business - Tesco work experience opportunity

Blind in Business, in partnership with Tesco, is offering an inspiring work experience placement for blind or partially sighted students aged 13 to 18 who are in full-time education.

This immersive, five-day programme will take place in Tesco's larger stores, with every effort made to place students at a location close to home. Tesco is also offering plenty of flexibility with scheduling, so placements can be arranged throughout the year to best suit each participant.

Location: The Mercury Shopping Centre, Romford RM1 3EE

DIY & Low-Budget Ideas

  • Pack portable sensory kits (fidget toys, textured items) for park trips

  • Mini-outings—e.g. weekly visits to nearby parks or nature trails where you can take a picnic. Pack binoculars or magnifiers for insect and bird spotting.
