SEND complaints: A Guide for Young People in education
What can I do if I don't agree with decisions made about my special educational provision or support?
Occasionally you may disagree with the provision or the support you are getting.
Usually any issues about your education or training can be sorted out through discussions between you, your parent/carer/advocate (if you give permission), the school/college and sometimes the local authority. It is important that any issues are dealt with as quickly as possible.
The Department for Education (DfE) have produced a guide with advice for young people aged 16-25 who are unhappy with their special educational needs (SEN) provision or support at school or college and need help and guidance to sort those problems out.
The DfE guide has advice on the following issues:
- Getting advice when you are unhappy with your school/ college
- Getting help if you are unhappy with the local authority or the health support you are receiving
- Further help from the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman and the Parliamentary and Health Service
- Going to disagreement resolution
- Going to mediation
- Going to tribunal
- What to do next if you are still unhappy with the outcome
