Young Carers

 

What is a young carer?

A young carer is someone under 18 who provides care for someone who is ill, disabled or has other problems.

A young carer is likely to help look after a parent or care for a brother or sister.

This can include taking on extra responsibilities at home like cooking, cleaning or helping someone get dressed and move around. The young carer might also provide hands-on support to a parent or sibling who is ill or has a disability.

As well as helping with everyday tasks, a young carer may be offering emotional support to their brother or sister and to their parents too.

 

What support is available for young carers in Havering?

Havering Young Carers support children and young people under 18 who look after a family member or friend with an illness, disability, or addiction.  

Imago runs a specialised young carers' service on behalf of the council (local authority) which support young carers.
